D(caps)ownloading a Reel means to save the video clip of an Instagram Reels into your phone for subsequent offline view or shared on some other platforms. If this is your post or posted from an Instagram profile that openly allowed its download, you download it directly via the application of Instagram; otherwise, third-party app or use of screen recording.
Some Reels are keepers. In this post, I run through how to download a Reel from Instagram depending on which kind of account you're downloading from, what device you're on, and how often you need to.

Having download capability is really helpful as you can use Reels while in offline and have them motivate you. Above all, you are able to reuse the same material in other channels, and plan Instagram Reels that were already a hit in the previous time.

Downloading a Reel from Instagram is saving a video clip from Instagram Reels to view it later or share on other platforms. If it is yours or from a public Instagram account that allows downloading, then you can download it right from the Instagram app. Otherwise, you will need a third-party app or use your screen recorder.

Steps to download Instagram Reels.

Method 1: Through a Third-Party Website

  • Instagram App:
Open the Instagram app and find the Reel you are looking to download.

  • Copy Link of Reel:
Using the mobile app, click on three dots (•••) at the bottom right of the Reel and copy the link
Using your desktop, right-click on Reel and select copy video url.

  • Visit a Download Website.
Open your browser and navigate to a third-party Instagram video downloader. Some of the most popular ones include:

  •  Paste the Link:
On the website, paste the copied URL in the field provided.

  • Download the Reel:
Click the Download button, and the website will provide a link to download the video file to your device.

  • Save the Video:
Once the download link is generated, click on it, and the Reel will be saved to your device either in your default downloads folder or a folder you specify.

Method 2: With Mobile App(Android/iOS)

There are various apps that might help you download Instagram Reels: Video
Downloader for Instagram (Android) or Repost for Instagram (iOS).

Here's how you can do it with an Android app:

Download a Video Downloader App:

Look for and download a video downloader app, such as "Video Downloader for Instagram" or "InstaSave" on the Google Play Store.

  • Copy the Reel Link:

Open Instagram, locate the Reel, and copy its URL (above).

  • Open the Downloader App:

Open the app and paste the link into the designated field.

  • Download the Reel:

The app will process the link and enable you to download the Reel into your  phone's storage.

Method 3: Using Screen Recording (Alternative)

If you cannot use a downloader for whatever reason, you can always record the Reel:

Enable Screen Recording:

  • Android: Swipe down from the top and tap the screen recorder icon.

  • iOS: Swipe down from the top-right corner (for iPhone X and newer) and tap the screen recording icon.

              Record the Reel:

Start recording the screen before playing the Reel.
Play the whole Reel and stop the recording once it is complete.
              Save the Recording:

The video will be saved to your gallery or camera roll, where you can trim and edit as needed.
